Wow!

(And the Pac 10 guy would NEVER use a clown like that. I followed the Pac 10 all over the southwest this season, and there were no clowns like that at any of the dozens of games I attended at UCLA, USC, Cal or Arizona.)

I never said i like his talking, but remember he was mic'd up... Is it wrong he talked?... like I asked before ... you had no problems with any of his other postitions? safes or outs... fair or fouls..an yes I have the directv sports pak and get to watch alot of College baseball games.. and I have seen some guys in the pac-10 you would wonder about.

we are gonna agree to disagree here.. all I'm saying is he must be doing something right, it was his 3rd CWS, and I have worked and seen some really, really great umpires in College baseball.

I didn't watch a single game on television; I went all over the southwest and watched the games. I'm not sure I can recall a single umpire who does things---almost everything(!!)---as clownishly as that guy.

And that doesn't even address his fashion stretches, and shameless advertising.

Well Fin, you know what they say about opinions, right?

Fin, NO ONE has said you're not "qualified" to criticize the guy. You have the right to your opinion.
But almost every response to your criticism has asked you to consider that this particular umpire has now worked his 3rd CWS. Your response to that seems to imply that the entire NCAA evaluation system and evaluators must be screwed up simply because you don't like the way he wears his uniform and some things he says and does in the course of a game.

As I see it, the problem is yours, Fin, not his. Unless everyone is wrong, (including NCAA evaluators) and only you're right. Consider that, if you will. Try hard to keep an open mind.

The difference is roughly the same as comparing a crack in a sidewalk and the Grand Canyon.

Realize that the NCAA says/does what it wants, and umpires must comply or hit the highway.
Joe West, in the meantime, is the president of his umpires' union.... sure, they have an agreement as to what to wear, etc., and Wilson is well known as the "official" equipment supplier, so.... Joe West puts his "W" wherever he wants it, and who's going to tell him he can't ? NCAA umpires don't quite have that same leverage, if you know what I mean.

Sorry for posting in a semi-old thread but I wanted to add that this umpire is a SEC official and UA is a big sponsor. He worked the SEC Tournament where, I am told, all umpires there were given UA stickers to place over any "un-approved" logos. Strangely enough the person that told me this is a PAC-10 conference umpire (2 CWS appearances) and without any prompting he said "Damn good umpire, AJ is one of the best out there".

Wow, that's just great.

His voicing in his calls is amateurish and clownish. His posturing and movements are overblown and clownish.

He is the umpire that has climbed the very highest of any other posturing, overblown, blathering clown. I guess that's something he is to be commended for.

Mazz, I don't think Finn is referring to a straight explanation of where the pitch is/was located, but more of HOW it was being done.

Instead of: "ball, down and away"

it was: "nooo, noo, you're down...."
