Default Doug Harvey in the HOF

There is a complete transcript of Doug Harvey's acceptance speech from his HOF induction ceremony from Sunday. I particularly enjoyed his direct reference to us when he said....

"...I want to acknowledge and congratulate every umpire from Little League to the Major Leagues. I understand all of your challenges, your hard work, and your love of the game. This is our day, and I am standing here representing you...."

He also got his digs in at the rest of the baseball world and some of the problems we have to deal with....

"...I studied my rule book two hours a day for every day that I worked in the minor leagues. Two hours every day, and I never missed. All you players, managers, umpires, broadcasters, or writers at any level, I suggest you know the rules, the "real rules," not the made up ones...."

It was a moving speech and even if you saw it on TV, you would enjoy reading the transcript. You can get it at this link...

Such a great article and such and honor for Mr Harvey whom I saw as a young boy call games in San Deigo, LA and San Francisco. Thanks. See he got us all in the Hall of Fame today

My favorite part was his response to a minor league manager: "To think that somebody in this godforsaken league is studying the rules besides me. That pleases me so much."

Doug Harvey was a Hall of Famer the moment he stepped off the field for the last time.

What in Hell took so long for them to honor the man? He should have been able to live these past many years with the pride of being a Hall of Famer.

Umpires fall very low on everyone's priority list even at the HOF. They basically put one umpire in there every 10-12 years to satisfy us.
